At least 40 persons — 35 farmers and five policemen — were injured when the police used plastic bullets, teargas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to prevent farmers from entering the land acquired by the state government for the Trident Group here today.

Jalandhar, Feb 1. (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi will campaign for two days each for the ensuing Assembly Elections in Punjab.

Manmohan Singh would campaign in the State on February five and six addressing political rallies in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala and Ludhiana, State Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh told reporters here on Wednesday.

AMRITSAR: In first incident of poll violence in Punjab ,one Akali worker was killed and severl others injured on Monday when SAD and Congress workers clashed outside the office of Congress candidate and sitting MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa at Beas in this district.

Punjab Chief Minister said in Chandigarh that he had asked the DGP to take strict action against the guilty who so ever he may be.

Patiala: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would address four election rallies in Punjab during his two-day tour of the state starting February 5, Congress sources said on Sunday.
Sources in the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee said even though the final programme was yet to be officially announced, the Prime Minister was scheduled to address meetings at Amritsar and Jalandhar on February 5 and at Patiala and Ludhiana the next day.

TARN TARAN: The election in Valtoha assembly constituency in Tarn Taran district was countermanded following death of CPI candidate comerade Kulwinder Singh in a road accident.

Music director O P Nayyar, best known for classic songs like “Pukarta Chala Hoon Mein�, died of cardiac arrest at his home in Thane today. He was 81. Rani Nakhwa, with whose kin Nayyar was living for over 10 years after being estranged from his family, said, “He was perfectly alright until 3:30 pm when he went to the toilet and collapsed inside. He was dead before we could summon medical help�.

Realising that rebels can damage the prospects of the party in the Assembly elections, the Congress today said “rebels have to withdraw or will be expelled�. The president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, lured the rebels, saying: “I am aware of their sentiments and they will be adjusted in case they withdraw in favour of the official party candidates.�

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan has been awarded France’s highest civilian honour, the Legion d’Honneur.
The award was presented to the actor at a function at the French embassy in the Indian capital, Delhi.

Shilpa Shetty, the Bollywood actress at the centre of the race row that dominated Celebrity Big Brother, has been named this year’s winner.
The 31-year-old star burst into tears on hearing she had won the public vote. She said the experience on the C4 show had been “incredible and overwhelming”.
